The Kent area of Conningbrook, in the Ashford area of the county, held a solitary race meeting on Wednesday 30th March 1842. The course was within walking distance of Conningbrook, starting in a field belonging to Mr Fisher. Runners then crossed Mr Sheppard’s meadow and proceeded for 2 miles before turning and heading back to Alt’s Wood. The main Sweepstake attracted a field of 13 and was a keenly fought affair before Mr Maycock’s Sportsman beat Pigiron. A later Sweepstake saw Mr Green’s Merry Lad beat Champion and Ellen, while the day finished with a match in which Mr Maycock’s Columbine defeated Mr Cartwright’s Vampire. |
